News: Iceman: Hunt for a Killer

Archaeology on TV and Radio Tonight, Sunday 7th December, 21:00 (GMT) on The Discovery Channel. Twelve years ago, the frozen body of a Stone Age man was discovered in the Alps. Nicknamed ‘Oetzi’, he is the most ancient intact mummy ever found and one of the most important archaeological discoveries of recent times. Previously thought to have died of hypothermia, recent studies of Oetzi’s body have revealed that he was shot in the back with an arrow. Iceman: Hunt for a Killer, follows the search for the murderer in the world’s oldest homicide case.

Web Picks: Antiquity reports on a major new megalithic complex in Europe

A new megalithic complex has been discovered, second only to Carnac in size and importance in Europe. Set in the forested hill-country of the Istranca Mountains in Turkish Thrace, clustered around the sacred mountain of Muhittin Baba lies a group of standing stone complexes of comparable complexity and size, with the total number of individual stones reaching over 2,000 (compared to Carnac's 3,000).

Avebury Complex New Stones discovered at AveburyNational Trust archaeologists have discovered an arc of buried megaliths that once formed part of the great stone circle at Avebury in Wiltshire, it was announced earlier this week. A geophysics survey has revealed that at least 15 stones lie buried within the circle itself.
Mike Pitts calls for one of the fallen stones to be re-instated - see comment below.

Archaeologists are delighted by a 2,500-year-old stone statue that offers a rare insight into life in western Europe before the Roman conquest. The stone torso, unearthed at Lattes in southern France, is one of just a few detailed figurines considered to have been made by the ancient Celts.
